The name of the game

May 11th, 2009 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 2 Comments · Life

What is it with Tories and middle names?  Why do so many of them have middle names that are so obscure you suspect many are not even real names?  For example, Michael Dibdin Heseltine, Francis Anthony Aylmer Maude, Nicholas Hardwick Fairbairn, Norman Beresford Tebbit.  I was looking through the list of candidates in the county elections for West Sussex and found the following middle names amongst the Tory candidates:

  • Fabian
  • Hewitt
  • Dilsmore
  • Millar
  • Wardropper
  • Gifford
  • Sanford

The UKIP candidates weighed in with middle names like:

  • Degge Wilmot
  • Gleed

Although, to be fair, Labour and the Lib Dems did manage Allfrey and Homan, but they are not in the same league as Gleed or Wardropper.

The list of candidates reads like the index to an encyclopedia of PG (Pelham Grenville) Wodehouse!  Best name of the lot in my opinion – and call me biased if you like – is the Labour candidate for Worthing West, and the penultimate name on the list: Eileen Mary Treasure Powell.

Good job it was Mum that registered you – you’ve just got Clifford, I reckon Dad would have put all his choices on and you’d be Julian Adrian Denzil Skudder….
I hear I managed to escape some choice family middle names too – how does Rose Florence sound?

Yeah. He was gung ho for bloody Denzil apparently. Mum bottled out at the last minute and just blurted out the name of the hospital.

Good job I was born in that particular hospital, otherwise I could have ended up being called Bartholemew Skudder or Leeds General Skudder or something like that.
