Micro four thirds

Panasonic Lumix G1

Panasonic Lumix G1

As it happens I am quite happy with my combination of a Canon EOS 1000D for normal use and a Canon Powershot 590 for when I really can’t carry a DSLR around and as both are less than 6 months old I don’t intend to be in the market for a new camera in the forseeable future.  But if I was…I might be tempted by the new Panasonic Lumix G1.  OK, it only has a choice of two lenses, and at the moment it costs more than the Canon 1000D but it looks interesting.   It is a bit too big to slip into a pocket unnoticed when going to, say, a concert so would not do me as an only camera, but in a few years (or months?) when the price comes down it could be a contender for a lot of people.

Not that I want to find that my DSLR is obsolete after finally getting one, but this could go either way: it could fall between two stools and fail to find its niche or it could be the future.  Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy all the feature of my big camera but sometimes it is a bit, um, big – especially when trying to pack a small bag for an overnight trip.

Still got to get my head around what all this ‘micro four thirds’ means exactly, but I’ll be interested to see how this develops.
