Crime and punishment

I don’t know how American law works, hell I don’t even know how British law works, but I’ll be surprised if the victim of a child sex case can ask for charges to be dropped, even if the accused is an Oscar-winning film director.I guess that in some crimes against property the victim can refuse to press charges, but for this sort of case it is as much a crime against society, since society generally acts to protect children.

I remain in awe of Polanski for Two Men and a Wardrobe, but making some brilliant films (and a few downright average films) does not excuse him.

The issue is with media interest that amounts to an onslaught of interview requests.  Perhaps instead of stopping their pursuit of Polanski the courts should pursue the media instead – but of course, in America the freedom of the press is paramount: above such things as the freedom of an individual victim, and they seem to have no concept of sub judice over there.  Letting a (probably) guilty man walk free can’t be the answer.
