I mentioned my miracle mail to a colleague in Horsham today. She happened to know that the Secretary at Hrosham, whose house it was addressed to, was in Crawley the other day.  He probably dropped the letter off at my house while he was here; that seems far more likely than any other possibility.
So the Royal Mail are not psychic after all, but that is no reason to not support them.

Not that anyone reads all this stuff at the bottom anyway, not when there is more exciting stuff to do like watching paint dry...
