Politicising the forces

October 8th, 2009 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · 1 Comment · Politics

I hope I’m not the only one to be more than a little uneasy about the Tories politicising the army?   We have had civil servants passing confidential documents to the opposition for political capital, Boris has already been hard at work politicising the Met – and anybody who was on a CND or anti-apartheid march in the 80s will remember how that feels – but having a serving army officer criticising a government while being offered a job by their aspiring opponents…  sounds like a dangerous precedent to me.

I’m not saying than an armed coup is imminent or anything like that, but I felt a slight shiver as I heard Dannatt speaking on the news.

Did nobody tell them that when people say the party conference is an opportunity to rally the troops it is supposed to just be a figure of speech?

Were you as vocal in your opposition when ken and Ian Blair were politicising the Met?

As for Dannatt – well you might feel he was playing politics but almost every serving soldier supported his views.
