Count Basie and the Cure

I may just have mentioned once or twice or even a hundred times that I am a bit of a fan of Spotify, but even I have to admit that it can be pretty bloody weird at times, and today was one of those times.

Sometimes I will use the ‘artist radio’ function.  That is where you pick an artist and let Spotify play a random selection of tunes by them and similar artists.  It is a bit like using shuffle on your MP3 player but it sticks to roughly the same genre, and with the extra bonus that it is not restricted to music you own or have even heard of.  It can be a great way of hearing some new tracks or even discovering new artists.

At the moment I am listening to the Cure’s artist radio.  It has played the Cure and Joy Division and then moved onto Count Basie – a nice track that also featured Oscar Peterson.  It so happens that I rather like Count Basie and in the past have got frustrated by Spotify because I could not find his Kansas City Five album in it’s library, but is it really something that will go down well with the Cure’s hardcore goth fans?

Just for fun I have looked at another artist/group to see what artists are listed as being similar.  Can anyone guess which group is supposedly similar to:

  • Bananarama
  • UFO
  • Tangerine Dream
  • Camel
  • Jeff Wayne
  • Ultravox
  • Jose Feliciano
  • The Members
  • …and others

Take a guess, but make sure it is a wild one.
