Bonus books

March 26th, 2010 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

Like many (most?) people who have more books than they ought to, I keep new books in a to-be-read pile and then squeeze them onto the shelves when I finish them.   At the start of the year this pile was quite daunting with the backlog of Vine review books augmented by Christmas presents, but during the last month I have finally got it down to just David Peace’s 1974 which I keep putting off for some reason.I don’t know why I am saving that as a sort of last resort book.  I’m sure it is as good as everybody says, and I thought the  TV series was excellent. Perhaps I just really need to be in the mood for what will be a thoroughly depressing book.

Anyway, I was about to start this last resort, when I noticed a couple of books on the shelves that I had bought and filed away immediately then forgotten about – I think of them as bonus books now.  One is Iain Banks’ Steep Approach to Garbadale, and so I started that and left 1974 for another day.

Having read all of Banks’ previous books and enjoyed them (and all the Iain M Banks books too) I can’t really believe that I left this one so long before opening it.
