Green printing

March 30th, 2010 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Technology · 1 Comment · Life, Technology

When I first read this story about a university in the US trying to save money and go a bit greener by changing its default font my first thought was of that Dilbert cartoon where the pointy-haired boss was persuaded that writing in lower case would use less disk space, but they seem to think they will knock 30% off their bill for printer ink.

As one commenter points out, it may be a false economy because the font they have chosen (Century Gothic) is a wide font and so it may use less ink but will use more paper. There is also some debate about the relative merits of using EcoFont.

Wouldn’t it be a lot more effective to just not print emails out, or is that too obvious?

A big yes on the not printing bit! Although I am always amazed by the amount of paper I see being bit in the (recycling) bin with only one side printed on. Maybe it is living in Yorkshire that does it but my opinion is that if I’ve paid for both sides of the paper I’m damn well going to use both sides….. Most stuff we print out is only for internal use so there is no harm to printing on pre-used paper.
