No more Ning

April 17th, 2010 · Posted by Skuds in Technology · No Comments · Technology

Well not for free anyway, according to this report.  This is really bad news for a lot of people.  Ning is a great system for setting up user groups and forums, either on an open or closed basis and it is used by loads of charities, community groups and other organisations to set up their own social networks.

I have been using it for a project where low costs are crucial and it has been brilliant.  I was quite happy to put up with the Google Ads displayed on the site in return for all the facilities.  I think I will have to start looking at alternatives though.  Should I look at another online service or look for some open source software I can install and run on my won server?

Anybody got any recommendations?   There must be something I can install which can provide discussions, event notices, announcements, polls, links and file archives for a group of (probably) less than 100 people – all password-protected and invitation-only.

  • Comments from anyone who is unknown (ie who has not commented before) will go into a moderation queue to be approved. This is to prevent spam/advertising comments and there may be a delay before such comments appear.
  • As far as possible I will not reject moderated comments or delete published comments, even if I disagree with them or if they are criticising me.
  • I intend only to delete/reject comments which are offensive, racist, homophobic, sexist or similar or if they are in any way illegal/libellous.
  • If you think a comment meets those criteria and I might have missed it, let me know.
  • Although technically I am able to edit comments I will not do so unless it is to remove embedded code which is causing problems.
