Hurrah for the Windsor boy!

I must be shallow and easily bought or something because now that a date has been set for the royal wedding and a bank holiday decreed I am greatly looking forward to two 4-day weekends in a row, with a 3-day working week inbetween.

Before the prospect of all  that was dangled before me I was quite indifferent.   The royal family has always been a bit of a blind spot for me.  In University Challenge or pub quizzes I can never get any of the questions relating to kings and queens.  In fact when the engagement was announced I couldn’t even remember if  William was the heir and Harold the spare or the other way round – a gap in my knowledge that the blanket coverage has helped to fill.

I know there are issues about the cost to the public purse of the event itself and productivity lost through the public holiday, and there could be an impact on the AV referendum, and the local elections in May, and the news saturation but, but, but… an extra day off!

Not too bothered about the news saturation though because it hasn’t affected the bit of the paper that I regularly read ((the Times crossword))  and thanks to V+ I don’t even watch TV as such, just specific recorded programmes when it suits me, so I find it as easy to avoid wedding stuff as it is to avoid I’m A Celebrity, Come Dancing, X-Factor, the Apprentice, and everything else.   Unfortunately that all means that I was possibly the last person in the country to find out about the public holiday, giving me a few hours less anticipation, but I’ll have to live with that hardship.
