Yet another fire

March 15th, 2011 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I see there is yet another fire at the Japanese power station, and continuing stories of the destruction and hardships across large parts of the country.

I’m not sure why, but a while ago I started to become a lot more aware, consciously, of how fragile and complicated the infrastructure is that supports even a modest lifestyle.  Things we take absolutely for granted like being able to flush a toilet depend on so many links in a chain.  Before recent events I was wondering how we would cope if we suddenly lost such fundamentals as running water, electricity and gas which makes it all the more depressing to see everyone having to do just that in Japan.

Would we handle it so well over here?  Or are we now too removed from everything?   A bit of snow in December and people were wondering how they would cope with supermarkets that only had semi-skimmed milk.  We feel vulnerable and practically traumatised if there is only one bar on our mobile phone.   As an erstwhile councillor I have seen some prime examples of disproportionate reactions, with bins being emptied a day late leading to a feeling that we have returned to the middle ages.

Would we be able to snap out of that state of mind?  I hope we never get to find out.
