Not spam but…

April 14th, 2011 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I’ve just received an email which is not strictly speaking spam; just junk mail.  I must be on somebody’s mailing list for ridulously expensive and pretentious events because from time to time I get invitations to buy tickets for Eric Clapton concerts with VIP privileges for a small fortune and similar.

In fact the presence of the words VIP, luxury, exclusive, select, premium and exclusive is almost guaranteed and they read like Basil Fawlty’s advert would have done if he had used a thesaurus instead of just writing “no riff-raff”.

The thing is that all these events sound ghastly, and are made more ghastly by the idea of being locked up with a bunch of people who all think they are better than everybody else.  Today’s offer is for ‘Riverside Lounge VIP Hospitality” (with a capital H!) at the Henley Royal Regatta from £225 + VAT

It starts by asking:

Where better to entertain than one of the premier sporting and socialite occasions in the British calendar, Henley Royal Regatta

Well just off the top of my head…  TGI Friday’s, my back garden, Broadfield community centre, anywhere that you can relax and be yourself really.  I think I would have a lot more fun putting £225 (plus VAT) behind the bar at my local than at Henley.
