Ten years already?

At work today I received an email from somebody in HR, telling me that in a couple of months I will have been with the company for 10 years.  It doesn’t seem like that long, partly because I did 6 years in one part of the company then transferred to a totally different job in a different town and different division with a different culture so it really did not feel like the same company.

For ten years’ service we can get a presentation of crystal glasses or a (taxed) cash equivalent of £75.   I think I will go for the cash since we hardly ever drink and almost never drink at home – and even then it would be beer or wine.  I’m assuming the glasses are for spirits, which I’m not sure we even have in the place.

Not only that, we don’t have glass cabinets or mantlepieces where we could display such things, preferring an almost Bauhaus-like lack of ornaments.  I have a cut glass bowl presented by the council  for my time there and it has never been out of its box, so I know the £75 would be gone quickly while the glasses would last forever, but they would last forever in a box in the loft.

Anyway, I am much more excited about the other part of the email, which told me that I get an extra day on my holiday entitlement.  That really cheered me up today, and is a gift that keeps on giving.

We get to choose from a catalogue for our long service awards – for my ten yearyversary I got some wine, a Le Crueset griddle pan (for Rob) and a double sleeping bag. And the extra day holiday of course! I think I may be coming up to 15 years soon – I wonder if I can choose a more mixed selection?
