The end is in sight

Election day is nearly here. Just over a week to go now and I think a lot of local activists of all parties will be glad when it comes. You know how some people have an internal alarm clock that wakes them up at the right time? Well a lot of people involved in politics seem to have an internal calendar which tells them when it is the first thursday in May and that has been messed with this year because the local elections have been delayed to coincide with the European elections.

This means that the internal calendar told them the campaign should be over a couple of weeks ago, but they still find themselves having to go out for another three weeks. Of course the extra time is a bit of a bonus, allowing even more ground to be covered, but you can see that a lot of the Labour members are running on empty because we also started early this time round.

I say ‘we’ but I haven’t been anywhere near as active for anywhere near as long as some of the others. Having said that, I haven’t been totally inactive. I know I haven’t been obsessively blogging, Facebooking and tweeting everytime I go out, but the lack of #LabourDoorstep hashtags doesn’t mean I haven’t been on doorsteps.

The current situation for me is that we have a pretty good contact rate in Furnace Green (I will say no more than that. I am sure the details are supposed to be secret) with lots of Labour promises identified, and a late, but reasonable supply of literature to deliver. I collected the last lot today and sorted it out into piles of the right sizes. I expect to get those smaller piles out to the local members for delivery tomorrow.

Considering Furnace Green wasn’t one of our target seats, I am quite happy with the amount of activity we have had. It makes a change from the last time round in East Grinstead when I was a complete paper candidate. This time I am even taking a day off work to go to the count on Friday, which I haven’t done for a while.

I’m rather looking forward to it actually, partly for the cameraderie of being with the rest of the team, partly for the prospect of seeing some glum Tory faces, but also because it means we will have survived election day itself, which promises to be a bit frantic with lots of last-minute knocking up again.

Wish me luck if you like, and if you happen to live in Furnace Green go out and vote. Preferably for Labour.
