This is actually a serious question, I can anticipate the obvious, satirical, Mock-The-Week-style answers already, but what do posh people do with their idiots now?
In the past they would just get the girls married off somewhere (whether idiots or not) and the boys would be found sinecures in the city, or commissions in the army, or perhaps a place in the clergy somewhere or a job with the BBC. In extreme cases they would be given a safe parliamentary seat in a rotten borough.
All these are now require some ability or qualifications, with the possible exception of politics, but even that has competition from a lot of bright people and in any case there must be many more idiots than safe seats.
So what does a well-to-do family do with a disappointing child these days now that so much of the old establishment is more meritocratic ? They can’t all have family firms to make them managers and directors in.
Careers in Pop Music and reality tv? Most of the cast of Made in Chelsea seem a little dim….
