Another one bites the dust

It appears that Crawley is now a UKIP-free zone, as our only UKIP councillor resigned on Friday.

To be honest, it doesn’t sound like it will make a big difference as he was rarely spotted in the town hall. I suppose he should be congratulated on doing the right thing, eventually. Having spent several years doing nothing he could easily have continued to get paid for doing nothing until next May. A pity he did not take the opportunity to stand down a few months earlier then we could have elected a replacement during the regular elections.

Had to laugh a bit at his quote:

Southgate deserves a councillor who can commit a large percentage of their time to the town, and I am no longer in a position to do that.
That is something that everybody else knew ages ago. Did it really only just register with him?

So you will be having a byelection down there soon? By coincidence, the Tory leader of Rugby BC has resigned as both leader and a councillor with effect from yesterday.

Not because of all the potentially embarrassing allegations about him that have come out via Private Eye in the past few years, but because he’s been given a new job (Director of a quango the council is involved with as it was set up by the local enterprise partnership).

Looks like UKIP have a chance to steal the seat.

Hopefully Southgate will be a Labour gain, though.

Whether we have a byelection depends on whether two voters in Southgate ask for one, so I guess we will. It would be nice if they held off until we select somebody!

Very little chance of UKIP retaining Southgate – not that they ever won it in the first place. Gilroy was sure he would win in May and didn’t even come second.
