The anniversary of Churchill’s death this weekend saw Nicholas Soames popping up all over the TV. As you may guess, I am not a big fan of Soames. On top of all the normal reasons to dislike a Tory you can add his shamelss trading on the reputation of his illustrious relative.
I do think he is as incapable of going more than 5 minutes in conversation without mentioning that he is Winston Churchill’s grandson as he is of going 5 minutes without mentioning that he is mates with Prince Charles. It probably is time that he just bit the bullet and changed his name by deed poll to “Nicholas Soames, grandson of Winston Churchill”
Anyway, it was most amusing to hear him talking about it all, when he said something along the lines of “Whenever you talk to an American and Winston Churchill’s name crops up…” at which point I immediately and uncharitably thought ‘you mean when you bring his name up at the earliest opportunity, and just happen to mention that you are his grandson’, because I have spoken to plenty of Americans and that topic has never cropped up at all.
