Twin Peaks

There is a lot of hype about a new series of Twin Peaks, which is exciting a lot of people and I kind of wish I was one of them. The thing is, I never watched Twin Peaks when it first came out. It sounds like something I would have enjoyed, so I wonder why I didn’t watch it.

I can only think that in the very early 90s I was in the fortunate position of not having time to watch much television, at least not the sort that requires you to keep up with it. At that time I was probably out of the country an average of twice a month, sometimes just for a day or two, but sometimes for a week or two. And I did not have a VCR.

It seems primitive now, but back then if you didn’t see a show when it broadcast, you really had missed it. There was no catch up on demand, no repeats on a More4-type channel throughout the week, no YouTube or iPlayer. If you missed episode 3 of something you were very unlikely to be able to see it before episode 4 came out. If you had a busy job, shift work or a decent social life, and no VCR it really wasn’t worth investing time in serials or soap operas, so I stuck to comedies, films, and other one-offs.

I never really felt like I missed out until now. I suppose I could find the original shows on Netflix or somewhere, maybe pick up the DVD box set for a few quid, but I am not sure it will have the same impact as seeing it at the time it was having such a big impact.

It is a bit like Star Wars. I never saw it when it came out. I can’t remember when I did get round to watching it , but I know it was on DVD and I really could not see what the fuss was about, though I am sure that if I had seen it as a teenager I would probably be as obsessed with it as everyone else my age is. I am worried that if I watched Twin Peaks now it just wouldn’t take.
