Two ways to feel old

July 30th, 2018 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 1 Comment · Life

As you get older, it gets really easy to actually feel it. Here are two ways I have felt it recently.

Reading entertainment news. Most recently it was a story about Demi Lovato being hospitalised, to which my first reaction was wondering why some obscure one-hit wonder merited such coverage. And then I looked her up and find thst she has made 6 albums and had 7 top-20 singles, including one that got to No. 3 in the UK 6 years ago, so obviously she is not obscure, it is just me being completely out of touch with current pop.

Talking to young people. At work we have a constantly refreshed supply of graduates joining the company, and we usually have one in our department. As you talk to them and make a passing reference to something that you consider to be a common reference point you realise that they don’t have a clue what you are talking about. I know that some things would be common conversational currency to my generation that I would not expect younger people to pick up on, like Lawry McMenemy’s adverts for Barbican, but when you find that they have not seen Jaws, or even heard of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest it is a bit of a shock.

And there I was, thinking that I had my finger on the pulse because I know who Cardi B is and listen to Bugzy Malone, but in reality I have just turned into my Dad.

A lad at work is studying Film and Media but hadn’t seen any of the classic films I mentioned. *sigh*
