1975 – You Sexy Thing

I’ll be honest, I was going to pick Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir to sum up 1975, or shine on you Crazy Diamond, but realised that Hot Chocolate just brings back the memories of that year so much better. Bohemian Rhapsody would have been just too obvious, and I’m a bit tired of it now anyway.

By now I had started buying records myself and had a small collection, including Band on the Run, Tubular Bells, Elton John’s Greatest Hits and some singles I really can’t remember. My uncle was a DJ at a BBC local station and would sometimes give me a box of surplus singles. Many of them completely obscure that never got anywhere, some of them well-known. I listened to them all on their merits, kept the ones I liked and let Dad take anything left over that he wanted. It meant that I had stuff that was a big part of my listening that nobody else at school had really heard of and that I wouldn’t have otherwise heard myself. For example, Jackie Blueby the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

One thing that did pass me by in 1975 was the release of Dr. Feelgood’s first album, Down by the Jetty. Of course there were lots of other albums I didn’t catch up with until much later, but this was really the one that got away because it has been such a big part of my life since then.

What a year though. It is cruel to have to pick just one song to sum it up when there were such albums as the Tommy soundtrack, Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Born to Run, A Night at the Opera, Bob Marley & the Wailers live, Horses, Rock of the Westies & Captain Fantastic, Venus and Mars and of course Four Wheel Drive (which I did actually have).

For all that, You Sexy Thing just feels right, and as if I needed another reason, it is the ringtone on my mobile phone for when the MRs. calls.
