Charlie Brooker’s new programme, News Wipe, is like a 30-minute illustration of the phrase “many a true word is spoken in jest”. Not the funniest thing I have seen all week though: that would have to be the bit in Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle where the couple are sitting on the sofa flicking through the [...]

Men At Work

Loved the sketch about Tony Blair in this week’s Harry and Paul show (still available on BBC’s iPlayer). Not so much for what it said about Blair himself, which was nothing really, but for what it says about our perception of politicians.
I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass

My favourite quote for today comes from comedian Jim Jeffries, talking about performers who lose their temper with an audience. He says:
Sometimes people throw things at the stage, even at good gigs. That’s why all comedy clubs have plastic glasses. The British aren’t really responsible enough to drink out of glasses; we’re the only country [...]
Amused to death

British comedy has had a bad week with the death of Ken Campbell following very soon after that of Geoffrey Perkins. If it was possible to measure such things objectively I think you would find the world is now several percentage points less funny than it was last week.

Humour

I am starting to get worried about my sense of humour. I now actually look forward to the ancient jokes on Soccer AM and this week was truly tickled by this:
The other day I was hungry and all I had in the house was 24 pots of yoghurt, so I ate them all.
How did [...]
The old ones *are* the best

Why is it that I saw a clip of Morecambe and Wise with Andre Previn this evening and had tears of laughter in my eyes? How many times must I have seen that sketch? I must have seen it half a dozen times this year alone but it still tickles me as much [...]
Religious stereotyping

There is a story in this week’s Crawley Observer which I really can’t resist referring to. It starts off like this:
Christians may not be known for their sense of humour - but that could all be about to change if one Horley preacher gets his way.
Hello? I am not a Christian, but if I [...]

That Mitchell & Webb hype
October 14th, 2006 · No Comments · Life
You cannot open a newspaper or magazine at the moment without coming across something about Mitchell & Webb, usually saying they are the future of British comedy and comparing them to Peter Cook & Dudley Moore.
I saw That Mitchell & Webb Look last night, and thought it was funny enough. Robert Webb has the ability [...]
Labour blogger spotted on TV

Its always nice to see a face you recognise pop up on the TV. This evening I was flicking through the channels, settled on something relaxing to pass a bit of time while trying to knock up a Powerpoint presentation, and suddenly there was Danivon, large as life.
I would love to say that he [...]
Curb Your Enthusiasm
May 27th, 2006 · 6 Comments · Life
We recently finished watching the box set of the first series of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I loved it, but Jayne found it hard to watch, and she found it hard to watch for the exact same reason that I enjoyed it so much - the cringeworthiness of Larry David. His character in CYE has many of [...]
