Well I finally got round to laying the laminate flooring in the ground floor hallway. What a performance! 3 sets of architraves to cut around… I made a bit of a mess of it, but the overall effect is good. Its only a problem if you look at the edges, but they will get covered over when I put beading round it. The toilet and cupboard doors are a bit tight now and need planing at the bottom so tomorrow I will see about going to buy a plane so I can do that. (Why don’t I have a plane? I seem to have everything else.)

I don’t think I quite have enough wood left to do the upstairs landings and the cupboard in the living room, and certainly don’t have enough underlay – I used up all of that. I shall have to do some calculations to see whether I need to buy another box or another two boxes of wood. I need to get that done so we can do the carpeting on the stairs.

Actually, as I sit here and look out to the stairs, they look distinctly uneven. I have have to check them with the spirit level. Even if they are crooked, I don’t think I could face having the builders in again, so they can stay that way!

Still heard nothing about that job interview last week. But on the plus side, I managed to lay a bit of flooring tonight. Only the little bit at the bottom of the stairs to the living room, but its a start. Now I can see how it is all done I can do the bigger bit in the hall at the weekend. And it only involved moderate swearing!

As you can guess from the title, its been a long day.

I was up at 6:15 so I could get down the station by 7:00 in time to renew my season ticket before catching my normal train.

After work I met up with Jayne in Crawley Town Centre so we could pick up some blinds for the kitchen – at the moment the windows are bare and everyone passing can (and does) look straight into the house. There are a couple of kids in the street in particular who are always staring in, which is a bit off-putting and annoying.

When we got home I put up some wall brackets in the kitchen for the microwave oven, and also for a portable TV. I was not too happy with the stability of the TV bracket though, and will probably take it down and move it to another wall at the weekend. At the moment it is fixed to a cavity wall and I don’t trust its sturdiness.

After those little jobs were done I started to unpack all my hi-fi separates from the cupboard so I could set it all up. That might sound like an easy, trivial job but it took ages. There is an amplifier and 5 inputs to it (plus inputs from the TV and DVD player), and 6 speakers to arrange and wire up together. I was only halfway through when I had to break for dinner. When I eventually finished I tried again to get Jayne’s PC to access the printer on mine. I still haven’t got it working, and feel sure I have missed something blindingly obvious. Maybe I was just too tired to think straight.

Anyway, having got all that done I have cleared away all the tools, boxes, piles of spare cables etc. and crammed them in the cupboard so that the room looks a bit civilised again, and now, after a refreshinhg shower, I am all done for the day, ready to go off to bed, but know I have to be up again in 4 hours…

I really do have a major lay-in planned for Saturday morning!
