Those little moments you live for

October 19th, 2009 · No Comments · Life

Last wednesday Chrystal passed her driving test.  By Friday she had found a little cheap runabout that she liked the look of so we went off to look at it.   During the drive there Jayne was driving and I was riding shotgun.  Chrystal was in the back where we couldn’t see her. I happened to [...]

Death of Autotune

October 17th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life, Music, Technology

On his latest album, The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z has a track called Death of Autotune. Would that was true.  I have been at a party, in fact I should still be there but I have slipped off home for an hour or two.  The DJ has been playing a lot of modern music, which is [...]

Further on down the road

October 14th, 2009 · No Comments · Life

What a day!  Chrystal passed her driving test, at the first attempt.  Well… first attempt at the practical anyway: the theory took two bites.  The first one was close though – I encouraged the girl by telling her that the result was not a fail but that she nearly-passed.

Big weekend

September 21st, 2009 · No Comments · Life

It has been a big weekend, with two late nights.  On Saturday Jayne and I went to the middle of nowhere for a family wedding and then tonight I took Frankie up to London for some live comedy.

Home alone

August 23rd, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life

Right now I am rattling around the house on my own. Chas is still at work, Chrystal has gone out to a birthday barbecue and Jayne…  she is in Ireland at the moment, after which she will be going to Spain and France before returning home.  It is really strange.  Last week we had our [...]

Reasons to be cheerful – part 100

August 7th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Life

A few more photos from and thoughts about Tuesday’s big event – Auntie Ivy’s 100th birthday party. In retrospect I wish I had taken the day off rather than going straight from work, hitting the rush hour traffic and getting there an hour late.  Since my own commute is a mere five miles I underestimate [...]

100 not out!

August 5th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life

Arrived home from Essex after 1pm, and want to be in work by 7:30 in the morning, so not really any time to write about Auntie Ivy’s 100th birthday party tonight, nor to go through the 111 photos taken. Just this one photo for now, best wishes to Ivy and a curse on the M25 [...]

Full employment

June 9th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life, Work

Full employment has reached this house for the first time.  Today Chrystal received a job offer from the new Morrisons in Broadfield so she will be working weekends and evenings while she finishes off school – should pay for her driving lessons if nothing else.   We know a lot of people who will be working [...]

Sisters make people happy

April 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life

I should probably mention this before my eponymous sister does – one of the news stories that did catch my eye while I was offline.  Apparently, and I’m sure Mother would have no arguments with this, “Sisters spread happiness while brothers breed distress” according to ‘experts’.

There is more to being a teacher than just teaching

February 7th, 2009 · No Comments · Life

Last month there was a brilliant example of the ways a teacher can improve the lives or happiness of pupils without having to teach anything.  The whole pastoral care thing is difficult to pin down and define and impossible to measure and put into league tables, but can make a lot of difference, which we [...]
