Jayne and I sat down to watch In Bruges this evening. What a fantastic film that is. Neither of us knew much about it: she didn’t know anything and I just knew it was about a couple of hit men hiding out in Bruges. It was violent in parts, but absolutely hilarious.
Bit of a bargain [...]

In the Loop
March 8th, 2010 · 3 Comments · Life, Politics
I watched In the Loop on the TV this evening, so I have now seen one of the films nominated for an Oscar today. I saw it the way most of the Academy judges would have seen it – i.e. without having seen In the Thick of it. Really. Not only have I never seen [...]
Survive Style 5+
February 2nd, 2010 · No Comments · Life
Tonight I watched a Japanese film called Survive Style 5+. It is another one I got from Amazon’s Vine programme. I actually got it last month but kept putting off watching: I never really felt in the right mood. Tonight I decided to give it a try and found it to be a remarkable film, [...]
So that was 2009

Another year gone, another decade even. I can hardly get my head round how much has happened in the noughties, and since I didn’t start this blog until halfway through 2004 I would be hard-pressed to remember a lot of it anyway, though I do seem to recall getting married at some point. It is [...]
The most annoying thing about Halloween
November 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · Life
This is not where I bang on about telling children that for one night a year it is OK to accept sweets from strangers and the endless streams of children knocking on your door. That is easily addressed. You can already put up posters saying ‘no trick or treat please’, although I think it would [...]

The gift that keeps on giving

I watched Goldmember again tonight. There were a few jokes or references I didn’t get before because I have been catching up on stuff in recent years so there are some things I hadn’t heard of the first time round, though I probably should have.
Prime example was in the Japanese sub-titles bit where Austin Powers [...]
Gross-out horror for the sake of it

Earlier this week I watched Staunton Hill on DVD. Or to use its official title “Cameron Romero’s Staunton Hill”. I wasn’t too impressed, and was glad I got it free through Amazon’s Vine programme and didn’t part with money for it.
Cameron Romero is the son of the legendary George A. Romero, who gives it an [...]
Black Sheep
October 5th, 2009 · No Comments · Life
This evening I watched the New Zealand comedy-horror film Black Sheep – the second NZ film I have watched this year. I think it cost me about three quid in HMV and have not laughed so much for ages. It is like a cross between Resident Evil and Footrot Flats and all done in the [...]
Going Commando

Last week I was frustrated when I decided to watch Commando and discovered that I didn’t actually have it. Yesterday I bought it in HMV so I could scratch that itch. It was only available in a box set with Predator, Terminator & Conan. Good value – although I already have Predator. So tonight I [...]
Bang, boom, yippee-kayay etc.

For no particular reason I decided to assert my masculinity this week, and also get some use out of my TV and DVD player which otherwise sit idle most of the time. I watched Die Hard 4.0 again first of all. I wanted to enjoy the explosions and mayhem on one level but riducule the [...]
