Last week Jayne treated me to some new toys as a 50th birthday present. She said she wanted to get me something special, but I really couldn’t think of anything I wanted. It isn’t that I have everything, just that I have everything I want. She suggested a new PC that I wouldn’t complain about [...]

Headphone smackdown

The other day I took possession of a pair of Philips Fidelio M1 headphones. They were a free sample for me to test out, which is nice. Coincidentally, Frankie had left his headphones behind (Beats by Dr Dre Solo) so it was an ideal opportunity to compare them head-to-head. The Beats headphones are ubiquitous. You [...]

Quick question: what to you call one of these? I have captioned it as a USB stick, but they are also called flash drives, pen drives, thumb drives, memory sticks, USB memory cards, and various combinations of those names. How is it that a device can become so ubiquitous so quickly and we can’t even [...]

For my birthday Jayne treated me to a new lens for my camera: the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, which is often referred to as the ‘nifty fifty’. What with one thing and another, I didn’t get round to really trying it out over the weekend, except for a really quick snap of the [...]

We watched that Stephen Fry programme on the TV last night – his 100 best gadgets. Entertaining but inconsistent sums it up I think. Some of the gadgets were extremely generic while others were very specific. for example, the iPod counts, even though it is just one amongst many mp3 players – and not even [...]

After my experience of having the BlackBerry die on me I implemented nearly all the advice about extending battery life and it has had a dramatic effect. Now the thing still has plenty of battery life left after a couple of days.

Too much information
August 13th, 2011 · No Comments · Technology
I was a bit late into work this morning. This was indirectly caused by information overload. More directly, it was caused by the battery totally dying on the mobile I have been using as an alarm clock, but information overload contributed to that.

Seeing as I am off work this wek, just using up some holiday, and live just round the corner from the County Oak retail park, I went for a stroll this afternoon to look round the big shops. Actually, to be more accurate, I had to go to the pet shop to get yet another [...]
