Jayne and I went to a fund-raising quiz at Crawley Labour Club last night. We formed a team with the chairs of Horsham and Crawley CLPs. My recent track record on quizzes has not been brilliant; a long string of second places is what it feels like.

A tale of two elections
May 3rd, 2011 · 2 Comments · Politics
This years I have been involved in the local elections in two different council areas. Probably not to the extent I should have been but that is another story. The mood is good in both Horsham and Crawley Labour parties, with a really good team spirit in both areas. Whatever the results, the party will [...]

Quiz subversion

I’m putting the finishing touches to questions for the quiz on Wednesday night (fundraising for Horsham Labour – sold out but could maybe squeeze another body or two in). I had a couple of brilliant ideas, which I am not going to incorporate in case they caused major civil unrest and/or ideological splits.

Number-crunching the leadership ballot
September 29th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Politics
I was pleased to see the data behind the leadership ballot released, and also a little surprised. But mostly pleased. The data is available as a Google Doc here and you can download it all to your own computer to pull it about in Excel.1 or Open Office of course [↩]

BBC hustings – too much, too late
September 17th, 2010 · No Comments · Politics
I watched the Labour leadership hustings on BBC’s Question Time tonight. It was the most I have enjoyed QT for a long time, but then it would have to be as I hardly ever watch it.  I think it would have been a lot more useful if it had been scheduled before a lot of [...]

Crawley leadership hustings and vote
July 20th, 2010 · 13 Comments · Music, Politics
Another week, another Labour leadership meeting. This time round was different for two reasons: as it was my own local party I could actually vote this time, and there was a hustings first. Oh. And there is a prog rock angle too.
Some stroppy tips
July 7th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Politics
Over at Stroppyblog there is a very handy list of ten tips for conducting yourself in trade union meetings, which I think should be applied in all meetings whether in politics or at work. I would be happy to see them added to the standing orders of the local CLP or the local council. Especially [...]

Clinging on to power

According to the Guardian Gordon Brown wanted to announce his resignation before the recent election. I’m glad that he didn’t. OK it might have got us a few more votes, maybe even a few more seats, but it was a disaster when Tony Blair did that – everything he did as PM after the 2005 [...]

Oops I’ve done it again
May 5th, 2010 · No Comments · Politics
Hot on the heels of his speech to Citizens UK, Gordon Brown has gone and made another excellent and inspiring speech – could have done with it all a bit earlier, but better late than never eh? This time he has gone for a long speech that is packed with soundbites. I think my favourite [...]

Make it so
May 4th, 2010 · 6 Comments · Politics
Had a great day today. This afternoon was so good it even took my mind off the £160 it was going to cost to get the wipers fixed on our car – the linkage had broken – because we had a celebrity visitor in Crawley town centre. Not just any celebrity visitor but Captain Picard [...]
