A future fair for all

February 22nd, 2010 · 6 Comments · Politics

I am not a big fan of political speeches generally, whoever they are made by.  I am also really turned off by campaign slogans, which soon start to blur into each other, so I was prepared to cringe when Gordon Brown unveiled the Labour slogan for the election this year.

Lessons for the left

February 6th, 2010 · 23 Comments · Politics

I found this article on the BBC website to be in equal measures interesting and depressing.  It is called Why do people vote against their best interests? and is about the US healthcare issue, but really has lessons for the left over here too.

Prescott-tastic

December 11th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Politics

This evening I took Chrystal into Crawley town centre for a Labour Party fund-raising dinner.  I was supposed to be taking Jayne, but her hip was playing up so Chrystal was a last-minute substitute.
The guest of honour was John Prescott.  He was full of praise for Laura Moffatt and Gordon Brown.  Not quite so full [...]

Money in the Labour movement

November 5th, 2009 · No Comments · Politics

Money is as important to the various organisations within the Labour movement as it is to any capitalist entity.  Well, maybe not exactly: it is not chased or accumulated for what it is, but it is very much appreciated for what it can do, and necessary.  No point having hundreds of willing volunteers to deliver [...]

October 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · Politics

Get a train home, get in, site down, start to relax…
…then remember that your constituency meeting is that night, so that after five days of assorted party-related meetings you can unwind with another two-hour meeting.

Labour conference – day five

October 2nd, 2009 · 3 Comments · Politics

The last day of conference is a funny one.  It is only a half-day for a start.  I imagine the original reason for that is so that delegates and others can stand a chance of getting home afterwards if they live at the other end of the country.
That does still apply, of course, for delegates [...]

Labour conference – day four

September 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Politics

Following Tuesday’s over-long day, when I was in Brighton from 0800 to 2300 I took it a bit easier today and caught a later train.  Actually a bit later than intended: Jayne was a bit unwell and waiting for the doctor to call back so no lift to the station – I had to walk [...]
