A few final thoughts on the London Olympics, and especially about the opening and closing ceremonies. The closing ceremony seems to have been as universally criticised as the opening ceremony was praised, but at the time I quite enjoyed it all, even if I now can’t remember why.

The Paris 2012 Olympics

I have been trying to imagine a parallel world where the vote in 2005 went as expected and Paris ended up hosting the 2012 Olympics.

I’ve enjoyed watching the Olympics today. Here are a few random thoughts that occured during the coverage:

After work today I watched some of the Olympic cycling, which was exciting, enthralling and totally bonkers. There was no keirin today – the one where the cyclists ride behind a bloke on a moped until the last couple of laps – but there was plenty of baffling variety. The women were taking part in [...]

What a good weekend. Obviously there were lashings of sport on TV, but there was also a trip out to Essex on Saturday for a 103rd birthday party. It was quite a big event, even if it was just in a back garden – an excess of food and drink, a bluegrass band playing on [...]

During the week I have been working my was through the box set of season 2 of Doctor Who, the first David Tennant season. I think that any nerds reading will know where this is going! Today I watched the episode which was set in 2012 (Fear Her), where the Doctor and Rose arrive in [...]

It is a reprint of Why England Lose, with some revisions and updating and a title change to make it sound a bit more like the very successful Freakonomics book. It is a good read, covering all sorts of aspects of football [...]

The other day I had the dubious pleasure of watching PMQs, since I was off work. A very grubby spectacle that nobody ever seems to come out of well, least of all that mad shouty woman with her arm in a sling. It consists of questions that often aren’t really questions and answers that aren’t [...]
