If you saw a link on a website that pointed to http://5z8.info/cats-being-dropped-into-the-sea_p6d8l_hot-older-goats.mov I bet you would think twice before following it – and then decide not to. If you received an email with a link to http://5z8.info/olive-loaf-penetration.gif_u0p8z_ninjastaroutlet it would probably get stopped by your mail filters and marked as spam or potential malware. But you [...]

Plausible spam

I have been having a few comments here that turn up in the spam queue for my attention that have been extremely plausible. Spam comments are normally very generic at their best, but more likely to be totally unrelated to the post they are on, and thus very easy to spot, but this new crop [...]

A couple of spam/phishing-related tales. Amongst today’s haul of junk mail I received this, apparently from “BT Connect Customer Service <info0009@btconnect.com>”:
Dear Esteemed Customers,
Due to management problems, your btconnect email will have to be verified by our customer service department due to large amount of spam complains.

Everything has been suspiciously quiet lately. I have not been getting many e-mails and I thought there were no comments here: I rarely look at the site itself but rely on e-mail notification that a new comment has been made, and I haven’t been getting many e-mails.

I was a little bit worried, reading a letter in the Guardian this week, that I may have set up Wordpress to automatically nuke any comments containing the word “socialism”. I have a ‘blacklist’ of words and any comment containing them goes in the bin. The list is of words which crop [...]

Nice spam

Today I had a batch of comments trapped in moderation which I strongly suspect to be a type of spam (and apologies if I am wrong) but I let them through anyway. It will be obvious which ones I am referring to.
There are four comments from two different names. Both names link to websites [...]

Today’s most amusing scam e-mail purports to come from the Halifax bank. The fact that I don’t have an account with them is a bit of a giveaway actually, but this one stands out from the crowd.
The bit where it has a link which is highlighted and reads “Sing in to Online Banking” is [...]
