I am starting to wish I had started my holidays a week later. I am enjoying watching the Olympics, but now I have to return to work on Monday. Today was good though: not just for the gold medals in swimming and rowing, and the many medals in cycling but also for the commentary. Towards [...]

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Having a couple of weeks off work, and not going away anywhere, I have been able to watch a bit of the Olympics this week. Today there was some eventing, women’s weightlifting and canoeing, leading to the normal speculations, plus a few unique to the 2008 Olympics.
Natural’s not in it

I have just seen the sport edition of Mastermind with Des Lynam occupying the Magnus Magnusson/John Humphrys seat and I still can’t believe it. I have never seen a TV presenter looking less relaxed. I stumbled across a review of this the other day which said the same thing at great length and I thought [...]
Superstars
July 18th, 2008 · No Comments · Life
I don’t usually find myself watching Five, but tonight I had a look at Superstars.  I tuned in because I half-remembered reading somewhere that the show was going to be in Crawley’s K2 leisure centre at some point: I kept watching because the format is pretty compulsive.
Anyone for tennis?
July 3rd, 2008 · 5 Comments · Life
I can’t really get into tennis. I used to enjoy playing it, but I can’t derive much enjoyment from watching it. I saw the last 30 minutes of Andy Murray getting beaten in straight sets and even that was a bit dull. This was a quarter final of one of the top events in the [...]

One for the London Olympics?
February 14th, 2008 · No Comments · Life
My immediate reaction to this story was, obviously, amusement – with a bit of bemusement thrown in for good measure – but after taking a moment to think about it I reckon it all makes sense and ought to qualify as a serious sport.
A great weekend for British sport!

I can’t understand why everyone is so gloomy about sport this week. West Ham won and avoided slipping down the table, the English rugby team turned around a tournament which they started by losing 36-nil and ended up almost winning it, and Lewis Hamilton came within a point of winning the F1 title in his [...]
Rugby
October 13th, 2007 · 9 Comments · Life
Well I watched the rugby this evening. England winning something is always good to see, but I still have no bloody idea what is going on. The game of rugby is totally opaque to me. Lots of big blokes running into each other and a substitution every 2 minutes is about as much as I [...]
The power of whingeing
November 28th, 2006 · No Comments · Life
I was totally gobsmacked by this story in the Guardian today. Lets see if I have got this right… the entertainment at a cricket match included a song parody which accused us Brits of whingeing, so we (or our representatives out there in the ‘Barmy Army’) whinged about it, and got an apology. I though [...]
Sport for all?
October 8th, 2006 · No Comments · Life
Like several other bloggers I had an e-mail today from streetgames, a charity trying to encourage and enable more youngsters to take up sport, asking if I would mention them, their pamphlet, and an article in today’s Observer mentioning them. As it seems like a good cause, I suppose I should. The type of events [...]
