Watching Blues at the BBC tonight left me very confused after Long John Baldry. Surely the blues is not meant to be sung in a velvet dinner jacket, floppy bow tie and large frilly cuffs?

Iron Maiden

I watched the Iron Maiden concert that I recorded on BBC Four’s Heavy Metal Britannia night yesterday. I understand it is a cut-down version of the Flight 666 film of theirs. I don’t know what it is about Iron Maiden but I just can’t warm to them as much as I probably should.

In the Loop

I watched In the Loop on the TV this evening, so I have now seen one of the films nominated for an Oscar today. I saw it the way most of the Academy judges would have seen it – i.e. without having seen In the Thick of it. Really. Not only have I never seen [...]
Heavy Metal Britannia

The BBC Four documentary Heavy Metal Britannia this evening was quite entertaining, as this whole series of programmes has been. Possibly too long for a casual non-metal fan but too short to do more than scratch the surface it was still a good way to pass 90 minutes.

First time voters

Tonight I broke a few TV habits to watch First Time Voters Question Time: I watched a TV programme live rather than on iPlayer or V+, I watched a political programme, and I watched something on BBC Three – all things I don’t really do very often these days. I actually enjoyed it a lot [...]
Reggaeton

I found the entire short series of Latin Music USA on BBC Four to be greatly entertaining, but it also opened my ears to a few new sounds. Last week I went straight onto Spotify after watching the programme to look for Fania All Stars, Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri and similar: this week it was [...]
Best of British

Even now, with only two survivors who are both past their prime, the Who can still pull off a spectacular show. The memory of seeing the bloody terrible Las Vegas concert on TV recently was still fresh so I was half-expecting a bit of car crash TV, but the Superbowl half-time show was magnificent.
Spoilt for choice

Normally I complain that there is nothing on television, although complain might be a bit strong. I have enough to do without television and if I really feel I need to watch moving pictures there is enough on Youtube or in the DVD collection to keep me occupied – or even the few VHS tapes [...]

National TV Awards
January 22nd, 2010 · No Comments · Life
I caught something on the news this morning about the National TV Awards which really summed up for me the atrocious state of British TV at the moment: X Factor won the award for best most popular TV talent show, which implies there are now so many of the damn things it is worth having [...]
Interfering journalists

I saw a wonderful thing on the BBC News last night. There was a piece about events in Haiti and the news team out there actually got involved. Reporters in disaster areas often appear to be taking the approach of wildlife documentaries – recording events but not interfering. For all we know they are always [...]
