Get Better

March 17th, 2010 · No Comments · Music, Politics

I’m very impressed by the new album from Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip so far.  I doubt I will get as attached to any of the tracks as I am to Thou Shalt Always Kill, because that really is a classic, but there are some fine lyrics on tracks like Great Britain, Stake a [...]

Mismatch

March 13th, 2010 · No Comments · Life, Music

Watching Blues at the BBC tonight left me very confused after Long John Baldry.   Surely the blues is not meant to be sung in a velvet dinner jacket, floppy bow tie and large frilly cuffs?

Best of British

February 8th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Music

Even now, with only two survivors who are both past their prime, the Who can still pull off a spectacular show.   The memory of seeing the bloody terrible Las Vegas concert on TV recently was still fresh so I was half-expecting a bit of car crash TV, but the Superbowl half-time show was magnificent.

Kidjo and Carlos

January 18th, 2010 · No Comments · Music

Two of my favourites together on stage: Carlos Santana and Angelique Kidjo   When Jayne treated me to Santana tickets for my birthday (quite a long time ago) Angelique Kidjo joined him for this song – which she wrote and he covered on his Shamen album.   It made my day then, and finding this clip [...]

Vive la difference

Another dull, weather-related post, but I thought it might be fun to compare the response to snow(balls) in two different places.

Not the best of the Downfall parodies, but not the worst either.

Me?  Since you ask, I joined the Facebook group for the craic, but didn’t download the track.  Still got the CD from when it came out.

Well I’ll go to the foot of our stairs

December 14th, 2009 · No Comments · Music

When I finally caught up with reading Friday’s Guardian I learned something unlikely today in this article about what happened to several music acts that looked like being the next big thing but never were. Not only that but it gives me an excuse, as if one were needed, to put up a link to [...]

Abandoned and let down by West Sussex county council

December 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Life

What am I going to do?  How am I going to learn how to use my mobile phone now?  WSCC went to all the trouble and expense of producing a (presumably) excellent video tutorial on how to make a phone call, but before I get a chance to watch it they take it down! (According [...]

Must be Santa

November 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Music

This is Bob Dylan’s new one – a Christmas song.  I hated it within two seconds, but then it started growing on me and by the end I thought it was brilliant and the best Christmas song since the Pogues.   Is it Christmassy though?  Sounds like the music from a Jewish wedding to me.
Unfortunately it [...]
