Ideal consumer

I am a well-trained consumer. The only thing that stops me being a perfect consumer is that a mixture of self-control and lack of funds prevents me actually buying all the stuff I want, but boy is there a lot of stuff I want but really don’t need!

On 20th November the final Crowded House concert in Sydney is available on DVD, and despite having the video I know I will want it for the improved picture quality and surround sound mix – just like I had to have the Pink Floyd Pulse DVD.

Just yesterday I found out that a lot of the Genesis albums are being remixed in 5.1 surround for release on SACD and I know I will want them to replace the CDs which I bought to replace my vinyl. In the same way I have a couple of Depeche Mode SACDs of their first two albums to replace the vinyl in the loft, and I feel sorely tempted by the CD of Ambrosia’s ‘Somewhere I’ve Never Travelled’ album (import available on Amazon) to replace an LP I probably haven’t listened to for 20 years.

And when one of my favourite authors suddenly changes the design of their book covers and all their old books are re-released in the new design it crosses my mind that it would look tidier if I upgraded the old copies, although I don’t think I would ever actually go that far – I know people who would though!

Just about the only areas where I am content to stick with the old model are my phone and my car, both of which are more or less bangers. Ironic really as these seem to be the items most marketed and which most people like to keep bang up-to-date if they can.

The thing is, with this sort of mindset persuading the public to give up luxuries in the interests of preventing climate change is going to be one hell of a challenge.
