Things might go wrong

Since moving to ANHosting I have got lazy…  I used to install and update WordPress manually, downloading the files, unpacking them to the right place on my PC and then copying them up to the web server, but ANHosting include Fantastico as part of their package and that does it all for me.  The only problem is that when a new versin of WordPress is released it may be a little while before a Fantastico script is available.

I just noticed that the script for WordPress 2.8.2 is available, but now I am wondering whether to carry on with the Fantastico option or try out Worpress’s own internal upgrade routine.  Might be interesting to see how that works.  The routines for installing new plugins from within WordPress seem to work perfectly well so I’m sure it would be OK.

The only worry is the normal one – which of my various customisations and tweaks will not work with the new version?  How much playing around will it take to get everything looking the way it was before the upgrade?  There is a chance that everything will be absolutely fine, but there is also a chance it will look bad and I will have to revert to the default templates while I start hacking around.   I think I’ll give it a go tomorrow night, so if anything looks strange on Saturday don’t be surprised, and do let me know in case I haven’t noticed.

That is because I forgot to do it… but I have done it now and it all looks the same. What an anticlimax – its like W2K all over again.

Think I will push my luck and upgrade a few plugins now.
