I enjoyed the programme about Not the Nine O’Clock News this evening.  I had forgotten just how big it was back in the day, and had also forgotten that Chris Langham was in the first series. I do remember that it was must-see TV at the time and if I look in the overflow bookcase upstairs I am sure I will find at least three NOT books. I even looked through a couple of them in the last year or two.
I have not yet watched the old episode that was shown afterwards, though it is recorded for later viewing.  It will be interesting to see an entire show, and to see something other than the same few sketches that are always shown, good though they might be. Gerald the gorilla, Constable Savage, American Express, the punk rocker in the toilets – all good but never seen in context.
One thing that struck me was a bit where Griff Rhys Jones was an inept politician speaking to the media who had to have somebody standing behind him telling him what to say. I was watching it and suddenly I realised that he looked exactly like a current politician…

I always worry that a whole episode will be like a whole Monty Python – some gems but far more patchy in quality than you realised at the time…
