The story in today’s Crawley Observer about food hygiene standards of local business was endlessly fascinating. There is nothing new about premises being inspected of course, but now the results are easier to find and easier to understand and compare.

I smell a rat

I think I may take sandwiches into work tomorrow. Just in case. Our canteen seizes on any event as an excuse to do a topical menu, hence the shark steaks and pavlova on Australia Day, everything cooked in alcohol on Burns Night and so on. Today we had an e-mail telling us that they are […]

One a penny, two a penny…
February 3rd, 2008 · Comments Off on One a penny, two a penny… · Life
There are so many rules about advertising and packaging now. I’m sure everybody heard about that case where a company could not call their sausages “Welsh Dragon Sausages” because they did not contain real dragons. And you can’t put a picture of a plate of beans on baked beans tin without saying ‘serving suggestion’ in […]

Turkey
November 25th, 2007 · Comments Off on Turkey · Life
Today we either had an early Christmas dinner or a day-late Thanksgiving dinner. We went up to Essex to visit my sister for lunch and she was kind enough to cook turkey. I like turkey, but we never have it at home. For Christmas we usually have beef and pork. The afternoon was a bit […]

Yesterday we went on a sort of works' outing to Calais for the day. It was an opportunity to pick up some cheap wine & cigs, browse some unfamiliar shops, and have a meal out and to see what its like going through the tunnel. Having to get to work for 6:15am was a bit […]
Disgusted of Tunbridge Wels
September 9th, 2007 · 2 Comments · Politics
This morning we went across to Tunbridge Wells to help deliver some leaflets for a by-election there. The election is taking place because a councillor elected in May did not sign the declaration of acceptance within two months and therefore became a non-councillor. I can’t really understand why anyone would do that. It is even […]
Halal
August 28th, 2007 · Comments Off on Halal · Life, Work
Today I learned a little bit about halal. Specifically I learned about something which I hadn’t even considered before. Even those of us who don’t know a lot about halal know that it involves animals being slaughtered for food in a particular way. But with muslim countries now being in some cases as removed from […]
Mmmm… Starters
August 28th, 2007 · 2 Comments · Life
I love eating out. Let’s face it, I just like eating, but I really enjoy eating out, but recently I realised something about my preferences: what I really like about eating out (or takeaways) is starters. All my favourite dishes are either starters, extras or side-orders. I think I would be perfectly happy to go […]
