World music at the Hawth

On Sunday June 5th the Doudou Cissoko Trio will be playing at the Hawth theatre.

I probably won’t go because I saw him play a month or so back at the Royal Festival Hall for free, and don’t really feel the need to spend eight and a half quid seeing him again so soon. Having said that, the other members of the trio are not the same as what I saw before. I think the percussionist is the same, but the third member at the Hawth is a female cellist: when I saw him before there was a male double bass player.

Cissoko is from the more melodic and relaxing end of world music and is very good at what he does. The music builds up and and is at the same time repetitive, subtle, and trance-y. A few of the pieces are rhythmic enough to make people dance, but I hope they don’t. I have been to a few world music concerts and the audience is often overwhelmingly white middle class. White middle class people dancing to african music can be embarrassing to say the least.
