I am hearing news that Bert Crane has died, which is not unexpected but nonetheless very upsetting. Yes, he was looking quite frail the last time I saw him, but then he was apparently not expected to live very long when he left the forces yet managed to go on to serve as a councillor […]

A strange new feeling
June 5th, 2014 · Comments Off on A strange new feeling · Politics
This is unusual. It is our constituency meeting tomorrow and I am actually looking forward to it, even though it is an AGM. Even more remarkable, this is not just because it is our first meeting since the local election victories, but because there is a proposal to change the structure of the party and […]

The morning after the day before
May 24th, 2014 · Comments Off on The morning after the day before · Politics
Today was the local election count in Crawley. Finally all that walking up and down knocking on doors and delivering leaflets was over, and to avoid withdrawal symptoms I found myself doing a lot more walking. I had a feeling it would be a good day. It was Friday and there was a long bank […]
Tony Benn
March 15th, 2014 · Comments Off on Tony Benn · Politics
Though he had been ill for some time, I think Tony Benn’s death was more of a shock than Bob Crow’s, possibly because he has been a fixture for so long I just sort of assumed he would always be around. I saw him speak a few times but only met him once, at a […]

We won a quiz
July 24th, 2011 · Comments Off on We won a quiz · Life
Jayne and I went to a fund-raising quiz at Crawley Labour Club last night. We formed a team with the chairs of Horsham and Crawley CLPs. My recent track record on quizzes has not been brilliant; a long string of second places is what it feels like.

A tale of two elections
May 3rd, 2011 · 2 Comments · Politics
This years I have been involved in the local elections in two different council areas. Probably not to the extent I should have been but that is another story. The mood is good in both Horsham and Crawley Labour parties, with a really good team spirit in both areas. Whatever the results, the party will […]

Quiz subversion
February 12th, 2011 · 3 Comments · Life, Politics
I’m putting the finishing touches to questions for the quiz on Wednesday night (fundraising for Horsham Labour – sold out but could maybe squeeze another body or two in). I had a couple of brilliant ideas, which I am not going to incorporate in case they caused major civil unrest and/or ideological splits.

Number-crunching the leadership ballot
September 29th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Politics
I was pleased to see the data behind the leadership ballot released, and also a little surprised. But mostly pleased. The data is available as a Google Doc here and you can download it all to your own computer to pull it about in Excel. ((or Open Office of course))

BBC hustings – too much, too late
September 17th, 2010 · Comments Off on BBC hustings – too much, too late · Politics
I watched the Labour leadership hustings on BBC’s Question Time tonight. It was the most I have enjoyed QT for a long time, but then it would have to be as I hardly ever watch it.  I think it would have been a lot more useful if it had been scheduled before a lot of […]

Crawley leadership hustings and vote
July 20th, 2010 · 13 Comments · Music, Politics
Another week, another Labour leadership meeting. This time round was different for two reasons: as it was my own local party I could actually vote this time, and there was a hustings first. Oh. And there is a prog rock angle too.
