Tories to go right-wing?

July 25th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

Hot on the heels of Direct Democracy and C-Change, this week’s group of Tories with a big idea is called Cornerstone who are urging their party to adopt a “faith, flag and family” agenda.

They sound exactly like people Alan Duncan described as the “Tory Taliban” last week.

One of their ideas is to have “a more patriotic approach to Europe”. When I first read that I thought it sounded like a good idea that we all think of ourselves as Europeans and act as patriotic Europeans… then I realised that was probably not what they meant at all.

Somehow this article just made me think of those cartoons Steve Bell did in the Guardian during the 80’s when he depicted Tory party conferences as full of chaps in pin-stripe suits carrying nooses and women with rockets and bombs sticking out of their hats.

For the time being the country looks likely to stick with Labour as the Tories are too busy putting forward alternatives to each other to put forward an alternative to the government. It gives us a chance to break out of our complacency and start getting ourselves ready for the day when the Tories finally realise what we did in the 90s, that the fact of being united is more important in terms of results than what it is you are united around.
