One of my photos

Crawley on Flickr

On Saturday I went down to Broadfield Park to take some photos.

The idea was for a few of the Crawley-based members of the Crawley group on Flickr to meet up, compare cameras and other anorakish activities, but one of the members got called out of town at short notice, and a couple of others who were half-expected didn’t make it.

In the end there were just two of us, plus a camera-less friend, and a child in a push-chair. (The same child who has been leaving comments here about Apple Macs) The last meeting was similar, but with a different couple of attendees. One day we will manage some sort of critical mass.

I am glad I went though. The first thing I saw on entering the park was this turtle in the middle of the lake. I never knew we had turtles there, although Chrystal told me afterwards that there are a couple and she sees them there all the time.

One of life’s little pleasures is seeing old photographs and comparing them to what is there now. Some of the members of the Flickr group have been putting up pictures from the 70s and 60s which are fascinating, and the most interesting are often not of a landmark but just of a normal street. Of course we can only get this enjoyment because someone thought to take pictures of normal streets 30 or 40 years ago, so I am on a bit of a mission to take photos now which might appear to be mundane and dull but which might have the same sort of quality in 30 years time.

One set of photos I would really like to take is to get some panoramic views from the rooof of the Crawley College tower, including the area North of the Boulevard which is going to be redeveloped soon.
