Chocolate bread and butter pudding

July 10th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Work · 2 Comments · Work

On the menu in the company canteen today was chocolate bread and butter pudding (with chocolate custard).

I am a huge fan of bread & butter pudding and an even bigger fan of chocolate, but let me tell you that putting the two together is a big mistake.

We were wondering if someone accidentally tipped chocolate into the mix – perhaps a labelling mix-up – and decided to go with it and pretend they meant to do it or if the new canteen manager has been taking inspiration from Hester Blumenthal.

If snail porridge or  bacon & egg ice cream appear on the menu I'm going to start making sandwiches in the mornings.

Mind you… there was a programme on TV tonight with a tasty young Indian cook and her even tastier young Iranian friend where they made a cake containing runner beans. I do hope the evil geniuses in our canteen stopped watching after the bit with the nice-looking tandoori wraps.

Never got the hang of bread & butter pudding. Too squishy and I’m still in thrall to the bread pudding grandad used to make. The chocolate thing is a bigger problem for me though. I love chocolate (Green & Black’s or Thornton’s for choice) but really cannot be doing with chocolate flavoured stuff. I wouldn’t really thank you for choc cake, ice-cream or hot chocolate – I like mine neat… It’s like most food, whatever Mr Blumenthal says, less is more!

I do like bread pudding (and it shows!) but bread and butter pudding is even better if its done right.

I like choc cake or ice cream, but drinking chocolate or milk shake I find really nasty. For the neat stuff I don’t think Droste pastilles can be beaten with those fruits de mer things coming a close second.
