Wet wedding

Yesterday I took some photos for a friend’s sister’s wedding. There was no official photographer and they asked if I would take some pictures as a favour because they know I enjoy photography.

I did try to explain that enjoying something is not the same as being good at it, but still got persuaded to help out.

Part of the problem is that I don’t really like posed photos too much, and of course that is what most wedding photos are. I also don’t like taking pictures indoors in recognition of the fact that I am no good at it.

The problem boils down to me not having an understanding of the fundamentals of photography – all those F stops, apertures and exposures. If I use the flash I find the results too harsh, but if I don’t there is too much blurring from having the shutter open so long. I did take on board Damain’s hints about point & shoot photos but still feel happier outdoors.

When the big day came of course it was pissing down so there was no chance of all the group pictures on the steps of the Town Hall or anything like that – they were all done in the Town Hall’s reception. To make sure of getting a small number of usable shots I made sure I took loads. In fact I came away with nearly 200 photos. Maybe 100 are usable, but only a handful are any good – until post production with Photofiltre came along to rescue a few.

Its about time I got around to actually joining the Crawley Camera Club to see if they can help me learn a few things.
