False Positives

When you are looking for something specific in a shop there are various things which help you find it. For large items like televisions you will spot the item itself. In some cases, like fusilli for example, you might see lots of pasta and then home in to the type you want.

But in most cases, its words which do the trick. If you are looking for beans and scanning the shelves the word ‘beans’ will jump out at you if it is there.

I think we rely on words a lot, as I discovered when we were out today and remembered that we needed to buy some staples. We were in County Oak retail park at the time, so we went into Staples.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but everywhere you turn the word “staples” registers on your peripheral vision. We found them before I had to resort to asking. I think that would have felt strange.
