I’m amazed, flattered, and gobsmacked to see myself described in the the Crawley Observer as an “IT expert”.  I suppose these things are all relative and compared to some people I might be an expert, but I work alongside some very clever types who actually deserve the description: the sort of people who can work out IP address schemes in their head and troubleshoot clashes between two obstinate applications.
These days I just do the co-ordinating, the documentation, the interpretation of policy and that sort of thing. Not so much an expert as a sort of jobbing nerd, but what the hell: I’ve been called worse.

I think ‘IT expert’ means jobbing nerd these days. The really clever guys you refer to as still proud to be called geeks. As for it all being relative, you do know more than most of them…
