I enjoy taking photographs and appreciate well-composed photos that other people have taken, but very rarely do I find myself going “wow” at a photograph as much I did with the photo by Simon Norfolk in today’s Guardian.
It really does look like a painting. As it was taken with one of those large photographic plates it probably keeps that effect even on a large print. Everything about it is just right: the trees, the clouds, the artificial ruin. It looks like a classic painting until you notice the burnt-out tank in the bottom-left corner.
The photographer reckons it looks like a Corot or Pissaro. I don’t think it does, but I can’t put my finger on just which artist it does remind me of. Somebody Dutch perhaps. Bloody good photograph anyway – Simon Norfolk is right to be proud of it.
