Ashes

August 23rd, 2009 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 2 Comments · Life

I’m not really into the cricket, but even I have heard about this Ashes thing.  Presumably there will be the now-traditional open-topped bus in Trafalgar Square in the next day or two.  Could be interesting for whoever is on the 4th plinth at the time.  Depending on their outlook they will either feel totally upstaged, or  take advantage of an enormous captive audience.  The logistics of keeping a path clear for the cherry picker to get there at shift change will be a nightmare though, and I am guessing there is some sort of requirement to be able to get the crane to that corner quickly in case of an emergency.

One thing is for sure though, somebody is going to get one hell of a good view of the proceedings – best seat in the house.

Friends of mine has a got a plinth place – but not for a month… No idea yet what he’s planning to do.

I think it’ll be much lower key than 4 years ago, and probably not the open top bus thing. Firstly because last time was the first series win in 16 years, and secondly because the triumphalism looked a bit naff after the 5-0 whitewash when England went down under in 2006/7.

But the prospect of a plinth-Ashes celebration mash-up would be quite fun. If I were on the plinth I’d hire a kangaroo costume and spend the hour pretending to cry into a pint of XXXX.
