All booked up

Quite recently I was worried that I was running out of things to read.  Somehow that has turned into having a growing backlog of books waiting to be got through.During September I thought I was going to run out of new books and so I bought David Peace’s 1974.  I figured that would not only keep me going, but also give me three extra books to choose from by getting the sequels too.

The trouble is that when I finished the book I was reading I just didn’t feel in the mood for it.  The TV adaptation was grim and harrowing and the book is supposed to be even more so.  Instead of starting it I re-read some Dilbert books, Freakonomics, and some other stuff but also got wrapped up in work- family- and Labour-related things and at the same time started re-watching old DVDs in the time I would have spent reading.

When my birthday came around I received the new Christopher Brookmyre book, Pandaemonium, as a gift so I continued to ignore 1974.   Now I have finished that and started something called Snark.  Not enjoying it so it is taking longer to read than it should, but it is one of the books from Amazon Vine so I need to finish it and review it.

As I was idly scanning the shelves the other day I spotted Sunnyside by Glenn David Gold, the follow-up to Carter Beats the Devil.  I had forgotten that I had bought that.  Before I could decide which to read, a parcel arrived from Skuds’ Sister containing a pre-publication proof of Robert Rakin’s new book, Retromancer.  Normally I would start reading that straight away, being a huge Rankin fan, but I was expecting another parcel and that arrived on Saturday.

The other parcel contained a pre-publication proof copy of Superfreakonomics – the follow-up to Freakonomics. (Obviously.  I think the title gives it away a bit).  This is another one of the freebies from Amazon’s Vine programme where I get goodies and have to review them online.  I am a bit behind with Vine reviews so, much as I want to dive into Retromancer I am going to have to start with Superfreakonomics once Snark is out of the way, knowing that I have three other books in the pile already.

Not complaining though.  There are bigger problems in life than having too many free books to read!
