Predictions are a notoriously risky business – just ask the IMF (about which Hopi Sen says everything that needs to be said I think).  But getting away from the unerliability of six-month projections by the IMF, how about a prediction from 1973 that I came across this week.

Frothing at the mouth
January 30th, 2009 · Comments Off on Frothing at the mouth · Life
The Daily Mail is frothing at its collective mouth over Jonathan Ross. When I saw this story I genuinely thought it was a very clever spoof because it really does feel like the sort of thing Chris Morris or The Onion would do. I double-checked and triple-checked all the URLs involved because I really couldn’t […]
Cello scrotum
January 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Life, Work
At work we have TV screens in the corridors outside the lifts. They display company news and information most of the time, and sometimes they show the BBC news. In the afternoon they also show traffic maps, but throughout all of this there is a ticker at the bottom with headlines from the BBC’s news […]

Loving the Art
January 28th, 2009 · Comments Off on Loving the Art · Jane
Just thought I would say that I am loving the Rijkswidget. Now I shall have to tune in daily for an art fix even if I get fed up of politics and pictures of shopping trollies. (Although I haven’t seen any recently – maybe they are unworthy subjects for the glories of the new camera…)

Cash for questions
January 27th, 2009 · Comments Off on Cash for questions · Life
After a couple of disappointing months, Horsham Labour party were back on top in the village quiz tonight, boosting the coffers by fifty quid. That should pay for a few leaflets. Talking of quizzes, I really felt for Exeter in yesterday’s University Challenge with their haul of a mere 15 points. I only watched the […]

The already lengthy list of the ways skuds.org is different to the BBC grows by one more item:Â this is the appeal the BBC refuse to show. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video (Film by the Disasters Emergency Committee)

Taking a tumble
January 26th, 2009 · Comments Off on Taking a tumble · Life, Technology
We had an engineer come round today to look at our tumble drier. Normally I would have a go myself: I like to take stuff apart in the vain hope there is something really obvious that even somebody with no spare parts, knowledge of the machinery or engineering talent could fix.  Never happened so far, […]

The shops
January 25th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Life
Jayne and I went into the town centre today, we had a look around the shops and pub lunch. In the past I have been struck by how many units in the town centre are closed down, but today it was another thought that occupied me – how many of them are still open.

Lost
January 25th, 2009 · Comments Off on Lost · Life
The fifth season of Lost starts tonight on Sky One, and we are a bit excited about it. Got warmed up this afternoon when Sky showed the last two episodes of season four with captions attempting to explain what the hell is going on, followed by a programme about the story so far to try […]
