I caught the fringes of the hysteria in LA about the so-called ‘carmageddon’ over the weekend. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to read much more than the tales of panic and didn’t catch any of the actual details, so I had a few thoughts/questions:
Were they actually widening a section of the road over the weekend or just replacing a bridge to fit in with the road widening? Either way its pretty bloody impressive. I went on the M25 the other day to Essex. I hadn’t been on it for more than 6 months and was only mildly surprised to find that the road-widening works were still going on. I do wonder if the works would be a lot quicker of they just closed the thing for a week or so and really went for it.
Then I thought: hang on… its already something like a 12-lane highway and they are making it even wider? Where does it end? When the road gets as wide as it is long?
Next I thought about what a good service the US news channels were providing for budding terrorists, letting them know just how much disruption they could cause by taking out one road and/or bridge. It would be like somebody blowing up the Hammersmith flyover but multiplied by 1000.
Final thought was… I wonder if I can get the old Carmageddon game to work on Vista/Windows 7? That was a fun old game.
