Thats putting it mildly. The story of the murder of a pregnant woman called Kia Johnson in America plumbed new depths. It still has to go to court so mentally insert “allegedly” wherever possible here but the way it is being presented is that an obviously disturbed woman with a history of baby-snatching offences befriended […]

Death Proof
July 14th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Life
Last night we watched Death Proof, Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double-bill.  We saw the other half, Planet Terror, a while ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, and also enjoyed Tarantino’s other films so its a wonder it took so long to catch this one.
You couldn’t make it up

From the Argus we have the headline Arsonist handed lighters by mental health staff. The amazing thing is that if you read the story it is even worse than the headline suggests. A man was sectioned for repeatedly starting fires. Staff at the place he was kept say that they deliberately did not take lighters […]
The Boss Of It All

The other day I watched the new Lars von Trier film ‘The Boss of it All’. Having been to Denmark on business trips a few times it certainly felt realistic, right down to the casual dress code and informal atmosphere. Fortunately the company I was working for was at the time was considerably less weird. […]
More Freebies

I like my freebies. I had not had anything from Amazon’s ‘Vine’ scheme for months, mainly because I took forever to get around to writing reviews on the last couple of things I had. One was a 500-page novel that was, although ultimately rewarding, a bit of an uphill struggle to get into at first. […]
Foiled

I wanted to play a small April Fool’s joke at work today. I thought it would be amusing to make a new label for the drinks machine at work so that instead of “chicken soup” it said “Soylent Green”. Unfortunately I don’t have access to a labelling machine, but that’s a good thing. I would […]

Planet Terror

The other night we sat down to watch Planet Terror.  Jayne rented it as a surprise and a treat for me because she knows that I really like Zombie films and Robert Rodriguez films so a Zombie film directed by Rodriguez was a no-brainer. ((That phrase still makes me laugh. Anyone who has seen the […]
Rip-off, homage or co-incidence?

Something is bothering me about the current advert for Direct Line home insurance. There is slow-motion film of water cascading over furniture and a soundtrack with lots of cymbals and organ under-pinned by a strong bass. Isn’t it just a bit reminiscent of the exploding house scene in Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point?

Two Zombie-related things to make me forget about the cold which, in its second week of snottiness, is making me feel a bit like a zombie myself…
Oldboy
January 16th, 2008 · 6 Comments · Life
Tonight I continued catching up with the 30-odd hours of stuff recorded on the V+ and watched Oldboy. The warning before the film started advised that it contained violence, sex, strong language, torture and a man eating a live octopus… not a common thing to hear!
