On the road again

August 18th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Work · No Comments · Life, Work

I have been doing a lot of driving in the last couple of weeks, at least by my standards. Under normal circumstances I can often go a week without getting behind the wheel, but with trips to visit the old man in Herts and visits to Raynes Park and Basingstoke for work, and a family visit to Essex this evening I have seen more motorway than I would normally see in several months. And its not looking good.

There are cones out on the M25 (several places), the M23 the A1(M) and the M3 – in other words every major road I have had to use. Tonight there were a couple of bits of the M25 being closed at 2200 and we just managed to get onto the M23 before that junction was coned off.

The trip to Basingstoke this morning took me about 90 minutes and the roads were mostly flowing quite freely. It occurred to me that I was making a big deal of it because my normal commute is about 10 or 15 minutes but loads of people do this every single day. Living 100 miles from work and driving in every day is not unusual. Forget about the cost of all the petrol and the CO2 emissions and all that – how do people stand doing it? At least 3 hours a day in a car, and more if there is an accident or roadworks.
